What Causes Pressure In Lower Abdomen, Bloating, Flatulence And Belching?

Question: Dear Doctor,

3 days ago I started feeling pressure and a sharp feeling in my lower abdomen, bloating, a moderately increased need for belching and emitting wind. At first it felt like a need to empty my bowels but only air came out of me. The pain is quite bad - it keeps waking me up from sleep.

It hasn't improved at all. In addition to those symptoms, I've lost my appetite and I almost didn't eat anything yesterday. As a result, I haven't needed to use the toilet for two days now.

I also caught a cold two days ago but I don't have a temperature. I'm not feeling very well in general.

Before Christmas, I had occasional problems with stomach for the last few months, some of them similar to the ones above but much milder.

I have a history of stomach ulcers (15 years ago).

Do you think I should see the doctor and what do you think could be causing this?
I'm not aware of eating anything different from what I usually do. I eat a balanced diet.

Brief Answer:
Stomach bug a possibility

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

Since the symptoms are of short duration and are more in the lower abdomen and that you pass wind more frequently, stomach bug is the most likely cause.
A stool analysis and a complete blood count may be done for confirmation.
You can take the following for relief - A course of antibiotics ( Ciprofloxacin + Metronidazole), probiotics and prilosec.

I hope that answers your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.

Dear doctor Kini,

thank you for your answer. I have a follow-up question. Since yesterday, I've also had a very severe cold or flu or something like that. I've never had anything this strong, my nostrils are completely blocked, one of my eyes is so swollen I can barely open it and I feel it's progressing down the respiratory tract (cough and sneezing). Noise and light are very unpleasant. I also have a strong headache. I don't have a temperature though and I don't vomit.

Do you think this warrants a doctor visit or shall I wait for what happens in the next few days, given the persisting abdomen problems?

I have ibuprofen and pseudoephedrine at home, together with the Avamys (fluticasone), will any of that help?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Mostly you have rhinitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Your symptoms seems of rhinitis
You can take tylenol (acetaminophen), pseudoepedrine and cetrizine for relief.
Instill saline drops in to your nostrils to relieve the nasal stuffiness. Steam inhalation would also provide relief from nasal stuffiness.

Wait for a day or two. If symptoms persist go to a doctor.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.
