What Causes Pressure In The Chest At Night And Sleeplessness?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 Dec 2016
Question: I have been up sice about 3 am with chest pressure and inability to sleep. It is now after 9;30 am. I took 4 Tums between 3 and 4 then Mylanta about 5 and again about 6:30. I can't seem to get relief. I went through this last Spring and went to the hospital because it scared me that I has showing signs of a heart attack. However, the ER doctor gave me something like Mylanta or Milk of Magnesia and the pressure went away in about an hour. Any suggestions? I am exhausted and still in discuomfort.
I have been belching, small belches, all night also and I just threwup a small amount of stomach bile prior to sending the first message. My last meal was a hamburger with grilled jalapenos. I eat them on occasion but it has not affected me this way before. I don't recall the meal I had prior to the hospital stay in the Spring.

Brief Answer:
A visit is recommended

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question. Welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

Well, the way you describe your symptoms, it mos likely is a heartburn, due to the last meal you consumed, and it can subside by using ranitidine or omeprazole, to ease it.

However, even though my index of suspicion is low, due to your age of 64 years old (risk factors for cardiovascular disease: male sex and age over 45 years old), I would recommend you to go to the nearest emergency room as soon as possible, so that the cardiac part should be excluded: an EKG should be done and a troponin level should be measured.

I hope my answer is helpful. If you have follow-up questions, I am happy to help.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton

Hello again.

Yes, ranitidine is an OTC medication. I think omeprazole is as well.
