What Causes Pricky Sensations In Various Parts Of Body?

Posted on Thu, 18 Sep 2014
Question: I am 57 years Male. I have diabetes since 6 years and osteoporosis since 3 years.
My present problem is I have pricking pain all over my body from head to feet. I have green veins and numbness in legs. This is sudden development since 1 week. My blood sugar was within normal limits last week. Today it is (fbs)133 and (ppbs)194. Last night I could not sleep at all because of pricking pain on my neck, back, hands, thighs and legs.
On 20th of this month I was feeling weakness due to stress. I have taken ADTROL PLUS tablet since 9 days (daily one tab) as prescribed by doctor. I also used magnetic power bracelet on my right wrist for 7 days (20th to 26th), which is supposed to improve blood circulation. I have stopped both these treatments now.
You may kindly advice suitable medicine as immediate treatment. I will consult a specialist in a day or two. Is the pricking sensation temporary and will it go away in a few days time, kindly inform.

Brief Answer:
You need to rule out neuropathy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Such pricky sensations in various parts of body in a diabetic patients are commonly due to neuropathy. They may be associated with burning sensation, numbness or weakness even.

In diabetic patients involvement of nerves is common and resultant damage of nerves leads to this.

Ideal would be to see neurologist or even specialised diabetologist. Doctor might rely on clinical examination or get nerve conduction studies done before starting the treatment. In most cases medications can help manage the symptoms.

So see doctor to confirm diagnosis and plan treatment.

Hope this helps. Please ask if there are doubts.Regards.

Even though I have diabetes since 6 years, I never had this kind of pricking pain all over my body (incl. head, neck, face, back, hands, thighs, legs). I am taking allopathic treatment for diabetes and hba1c is 6.

I just want to know the cause for this sudden development and whether is temporary. I have a feeling that either adtrol tablet or power magnet which I used since 20th Aug. might have caused. If it is so and since i have discontinued both now, will my problem is likely to improve in due course of time. Kindly clarify my doubts. I can meet the specialist only after 1 or 2 days.

Brief Answer:
I dont think it will resolve on its own.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

This can occur even though you are on proper treatment. This seems unrelated to your recent use of adtrol tablet or power magnet.

Symptoms can be intermittent, but underlying neuropathy keeps on progressing, so ideal is to let doctor evaluate this.

Doctor will test sensations in various parts of the body. Its fine if you meet specialist after 2-3 days.

Hope this helps.Regards.

Dear Dr, Thanks. I'll see specialised diabetologist soon.
Since I have pricky sensations in various parts of body, I'll be grateful if you could kindly inform:
1) Is it polyneuropathy
2) If I start treatment immediately, can I prevent damage to nerves
3) Last night, my condition was surprisingly better and I could sleep well
4) Does Lifespan Diabetic Clinic's non-invasive R.I.S.C. test help to evaluate my nerve condition.

Regards

Brief Answer:
Yes, you can manage it well if treated soon.

Detailed Answer:
1. With those symptoms I do suspect polyneuropathy, but needs evaluation by investigations.
2.Yes.
3.Neuropathies typically have ups and downs in intensity of symptoms.
4.Sorry. I am unaware of tests that are included in Lifespan Diabetic Clinic's non-invasive R.I.S.C. test. But if they are checking for sensation with feather like brush or with electrodes attached to limb, then your nerves are being tested.

Regards.
