Brief Answer:
rib belt is necessary

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.
I have gone through your medical history in detail.

Only Acetaminophen will not be sufficient. Unless a rib belt is applied around the fractured rib, she won't get relief from pain. In fact, the pain may increase.

Getting cold, shivering and sweats are not common after a rib fracture. May be she is having a viral infection or underlying lung infection.

Get her complete blood count done to see for WBCs and platelets.

If she does not get relief in 2 days, she needs to be started on antibiotics.
Do consult a physician if symptoms worsen.

I hope the answer was useful.

Feel free to ask me any follow up queries that you may have.

Thank you.
Kind regards.

ER doctor advised that no type of belt or other compressing device (aside from ice packs) should be used because could cause pulmonary/respiratory conditions. Cold sweats and shivering has subsided in last 2 hours or so. Should we wait a day or so?

Brief Answer:
Rib belt a must

Detailed Answer:
If the cold sweats and shivering has subsided, you can wait for a couple of days.

But,like for any type of fracture in our body,be it legs or hands,we apply a plaster for supporting the fractured bones so that they can heal properly, the rib also (being a bone) needs a support.

I am an orthopaedic surgeon myself and strongly recommend using a rib belt or a adhesive bandage around the fractured rib.

Thanks
