Brief Answer: Kidney disease, allergy, see opthalmologist Detailed Answer: Hi and thanks for the query, It is possible that it could be an autoimmune disorder. However, this is not the most probable cause to think of in the first place under these circumstances. It is imperative to exclude common causes of swollen eyes such as kidney disease, especially if the swelling is painless and more exaggerated in the mornings. It is important to note any past history of itches. If present, allergies should be excluded (allergic conjonctivitis). With a past history of eye disease, cataract, I suggest the opinion of an opthalmolgist should be sought, when common causes like kidney disease and allergies have been formerly excluded. It is only at this point that autoimune disease could be actively sought out for.Other signs and symptoms like joint pain, malaise, fever could raise possibilities of an autoimmune component. I really do not think autoiimune disease is the most probable cause of the swelling at this point in time. I suggest exclusion of kidney disease and allergies first. If absent, consult an opthalmologist for his opinion . Thanks and kind regards. Please, do feel free asking any follow up questions. I would be glad making my humble suggestions. Kind regards. Dr Bain
