What Causes Pulsating Sound In Ears During The Night?

default
Posted on Fri, 31 Jul 2015
Question: I have a bumping noise in both ears (like heart beat). It usually happens in the middle of the night and I wake up with it and it goes away. But tonight it is happening early in the evening after I took a shower.
What could it be?
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Blood flow to inner ear increases when you lie down

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have a simple theory that goes well with your symptoms. There is a large blood vessel called carotid artery that goes closely under the inner and middle ears. The blood flow to the brain or ear increases as you lie down and this feels to be noise in both ears. The noise subsides as you get up because the blood flow partially reduces because of gravity. Now we should check the blood pressure if you feel this kind of noise.

The other theory is your ears were plugged after shower and this makes the noise louder. You should get your ears tested for infections if it is repeated.

So please see a primary care for evaluation of blood pressure and primary ear examination.
