Question: My pulse is running at between 178 and 180 beats a minute. Has been for the last hour. Should I be concerned? I do not have any kind of heart problems that I am aware of. I can feel it pounding in my ears. I am not short of breath.

I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would like to explain that a heart rate around 180 bpm is considered abnormal at your age.

A normally happening sinus tachycardia (in case of physical and psychological stress) would be expressed with a heart rate up to 145 bpm.

So, a heart rate around 180 bpm is considered abnormal in your case.

Coming to this point, I recommend consulting the nearest ER service in order to review your actual heart rhythm (to rule out any potential cardiac arrhythmia) and properly address the therapeutic issues.

In this regard, some additional lab tests are necessary:

- complete blood count,
- blood electrolytes level,
- blood thyroid levels,
- fasting blood glucose,
- BUN and creatinine

Hope to have been helpful to you!

In case of any further uncertainties, feel free to ask me again.

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
