Question : Stinging & ache at top of left hip area radiating back toward top of buttock and down the inside toward crotch. Had the same thing on the right some time back. Had a hard time lifting my leg for a while. Not that bad now, but worrisome. I play golf, male, I'm 64. Chiropractor and massage people have mentioned psoas muscle strain. It responds to ice for a while, but always comes back. I do a variety of leg lifts on all fours, with the opposite hand also lifting. Been a week now. Have never had any bad injury in that area in the past. It seems like a muscle tendon thing to me.

The pain in the left hip radiating to the back can be related to a muscle spasm or nerve compression due to spondylottic changes in the spine. To find out the exact cause MRI scan of spine and hip would be most helpful. Most of the times such pains subside with rest, pain killers, muscle relaxants and a hot compress. Avoid all the painful hip activities and any painful exercise till you get an MRI scan done.
