What Causes Rapid Heart Rate While Urinating In A 62 Year Old Man?

Question: My new husband recently told me that he used to have cases where his heart would start racing while he was urinating. He's even passed out from it already, but it has been a few years since the last episode. My husband is African-American and 62 years old. Any ideas what would cause this?

Brief Answer:
Most likely due to micturition syncope.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Your husband's problem can be most likely due to micturition syncope. This is a vasovagal response. This occurs due to sudden drop of blood pressure. It is common in some older men usually when getting up from sleep. There is nothing to worry about this. This is a normal response usually.

Drinking alcohol, sweating excessively in sleep, blood pressure medications and hunger can be a reason also.
Avoid getting up from sleep suddenly. Sit for some time after getting up. Sit while urination. Make sure you are well hydrated. Better to avoid alcohol if possible. These measures will be helpful.
It is also better to go for ECG ( EKG ) examination and stress test ( TMT) to be on safe side.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
