What Causes Rapid Heartbeat While On Susten?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: Hi,
My wife is telling that her heart is beating fast and this is happening quite often. This happens during sitting and sleeping without any activity. My wife is taking fertility medicines from the past 3 months. But this heart fast beating problem started this month only. Her fertility medicines are Clomed, Anasom, HCG injections, glycomet, folic acid, thyroid. We visited to Cardiologist and all the tests like ECG, Echo were performed and found that everything is normal. She recently started taking susten 300 mg per day 1 tablet and she is feeling the same fast heart beat even on rest. We are worried if this is due to her medications. She just started Susten 300 mg its been now one day and I am worried that Susten will aggravate her problem. Please advise.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr. XXXXXXX I am Dr. Mody and I am practising cardiologist in XXXXXXX
There are two aspects here
1) during early conception as well as because of all the drugs, perception of normal heart beats increase, as the total blood volume increase due to water retention due to the hormone mentioned, it's like normal pregnancy where because of increased circulation there is compensation by the heart. It's a natural phenomenon and need not worry.
2) the heart rate increases more than the compensatory way it should. This is something which needs evaluation.
So I would discuss the possible reason
1) The thyroid function changes much in pregnancy, get a Tsh, free. T3 and t4 as more thyroxine than needed may cause palpitations
2) the progesterone now what you have been supplement may push the heart rate further, so do monitor the same. Also check her hemoglobin
3)rather than ecg, a 24 hour holter is the best test, so we can know all the heart rhythm when she is on all the meds, and with all activities she normally does, so if that is normal, it's just her subjective perception
Depending on the result of the above test we may take the next step.
Also do upload all the reports already done, so may help to objectify my recommendation.
