What Causes Rapid Weight Gain While On Seroquel?

The drug is known to cause weight gain.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for asking from HCM
Seroquel is Quetiapine and the drug is one of commonly used antipsychotic drugs.
The drug is known to cause weight gain to moderate extent. The drug in low doses like 25-50 mg which are used for sleep doesn't cause much weight gain and most patients of mine don't report with this side effect. Higher doses are responsible for weight gain and should be avoided unless strongly indicated.
There is no specific mechanism by which the drug cause weight gain but numerous mechanisms are thought to be responsible for weight gain caused by which the drug cause weight gain.
One possible reason as your psychiatrist has mentioned is effects of the drug on satiety centres in hypothalamus areas of brain. The drug increases craving of food and also increases the appetite. But you have mentioned that your caloric intake has not increased so we can rule out this mechanism in your case.
The drug also acts on thyroid hormone levels. The drug cause reduction of functioning of T3 and T4 levels by unknown mechanisms. This could be the reason for weight gain. To rule out this get your thyroid hormone levels done.
The drug also lowers metabolism. Lowered metabolism results in more lipogenesis and thus deposition of fat in body.
Anticholinergic and antihistaminic effects are main reasons of weight gain by this drug.
Thanks, I hope this helps. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more clarifications.

SO....because the Seroquel lowers my metabolism I take a 120mg (12 hour) Sudafed in the morning just to get my body going. Then I am able to walk 6-8 miles and feel so....good after I get back. I drink plenty of water and, as I said, I eat a balanced diet.
I understand that the antihistaminic effects of this drug are the main reason of weight gain by this drug but, interestingly enough, if I take Benadryl, as many of my friends do for sleep, it doesn't work for me, however Seroquel does.
I am going to have my regular physical in two weeks but prior to that I am going to have blood work done. I have asked my doctor to include a request that my thyroid levels (especially T3 & T4) be done as you suggested.
I have also been told that Seroquel can increase your triglycerides so I am anxious to see what my blood test shows.
Even though Seroquel works for me for sleep I would like to get off it but if I don't take it I just lay there all night, wide awake. The anticholinergic and/or antihistamines just don't do it for me.
Take diets rich in proteins and complex carbs low in refined carbs

Hello thanks for contacting again
Yes the drug is one of common medicines that cause weight gain. Apart from Thyroid hormone levels if possible get your Cortisol levels too. Cortisone levels if high can result in deposition of belly fat, though you are taking Quetiapine so the chances of this are low.
Try to take high protein diets low in refined carbs. This would help to control uncontrollable hunger and you will feel better.
Thanks. Take care. Still have more do ask please contact again.
