What Causes Rapidly Enlarging Mass Behind The Left Ear?

default
Posted on Sat, 26 Jul 2014
Question: I have developed a series of odd neurologic symptoms. Paradoxical cold sensation in my scalp, painful scalp, left skull pain and some itchy skin on my left scalp and forehead. Dull pain in the left eye, Shooting pain (throbbing ) in th left skull that causes come dizziness and nausea. I was not not tested but was put on Acyclovir for possible Shingles. Now I have a rapidly enlarging mass behind the left ear. I presume a lymph node. Is this an emergent that I need to go to the ER on a holiday weekend?

Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query. It could be a furuncle or an enlarged lymph node.

I would like to gather some more information from you in order to be able to help you better

-Is the swelling warm and tender/painful to touch?

The swelling is not especially painful but it is in an area where I am experiencing some deeper spasms of pain. I would describe the lump sensation as more of a fullness. There area may be slightly warm to the touch but certainly not severe. Since I initially wrote this morning, I have discovered a red bump on my scalp that is in the area where I have been experiencing scalp pain. I would presume that the emergence of this dermal lesion is additional support for the diagnosis of Shingles. I have been on Acyclovir since late weds night and can say that the scalp pain and itching has improved but not resolved. The pain spasms are somewhat better but still present. The lump worries me due to my fear of cancer.
Would you recommend that I continue to follow my regime of medications at this point or should I seek ER care today. I have plans with the family and hate to spend the day in the ER needlessly.
Thanks for your reply

Brief Answer:
Observe for a day or two

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

It is certainly not cancer. At the most it could be a furuncle/bacterial infection or a draining lymph node from an infected area in the scalp. I would suggest that you continue with acyclovir.

In case the swelling does increase in size or becomes painful over a period of next 24-48 hours, that would go more in favour of bacterial infection and I would then suggest you to take an oral antibiotic e.g cephalexin 500 mg (keflex) thrice daily for a week

An OTC pain killer e.g ibuprofen would provide you symptomatic relief from pain and you can take it twice or thrice daily.
