What Causes Rash On Right Buttocks?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Jun 2015
Question: Last summer, a round rash appeared on my right butt cheek. It has returned twice since. My doctor said that tests indicated it was herpes. I'm 70, haven't had sexual contact with anyone for over 30 years, and have no clue how I got it and what I must do not to give it to anyone else. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In answer to your questions after my first submission of this question (May 5), I have had no itching or pain; It dries up after treatment with alcohol; the rash (about the size of a quarter) consists of redness and small bumps; I cannot upload any images. Just an FYI, I submitted the same question today, not knowing that you had replied.

Brief Answer:
Fungal infection; use topical otc antifungal cream

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

I suggest a possibility of a fungal infection/ tinea.

You may use an OTC topical antifungal e.g Clotrimazole 1% cream Or Miconazole nitrate 2% cream, twice daily for 4 weeks.

Your answer doesn't really answer my question. My doctor, after completion of lab work, diagnosed my problem as herpes...not a fungal problem. My question was: Since I have no idea how I got it, how do I keep from spreading it?

Brief Answer:
Herpes spreads only by direct contact.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Herpes virus spreads by direct/close contact e.g skin to skin contact such as during a sexual intercourse. Not otherwise.

The virus causing herpes does not spread indirectly e.g through shared clothes, towels etc because herpes virus does not survive outside the body for more than a few seconds and dies quickly on drying.

The chances that one would spread herpes to others are more during a clinical episode of herpes and less at other times.
Though herpes virus can spread even during clinically asymptomatic phases but it is less common.

If the condition which you have is indeed herpes you must have got it from someone else in past. The infection with herpes virus can remain clinically silent for months Or years so one may not be aware when and from whom they acquired the infection.

Since I have had NO physical (sexual) contact (no touching in that area included)with anyone in over 30 years, is it possible for it to be dormant for that long??? I do hug and kiss my children and grandchildren. Can this allow transfer?

Brief Answer:
No risk of tranmission to your family members

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

If this is indeed herpes infection it is not unusual for the virus to present like this after so many years because herpes virus once acquired stays inside body for ever.
It may remain clinically silent for months or years.
The virus may multiply from time to time and travel along nerves to manifest a clinical episode.
No, there is no risk of spreading this virus by hugging or kissing your children or grand children. The virus only transmits by direct skin to skin contact with the site of infection.
Therefore you can safely hug and kiss your dear ones
