What Causes Rash On Right Side Of Face Post Alcohol Withdrawal?

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Feb 2015
Question: Hello,

I stopped drinking two months ago for two weeks and got a red stripe/rash on the right side of my face from my nose halfway to my right ear under my right eye. I resumed drinking and it went away. I quit drinking for the last 7 days and the exact same red stripe came back, but even worse. Is this a normal response to not drinking ?

Brief Answer:
No sir, this is not typically a normal response to not drinking

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Your symptom of an exact same line-like rash (rash which presents like a line is usually related to a scratch, either from a finger nail or any other substance), occurring twice when you went off alcohol is not at all typical for a symptom of alcohol withdrawal or lowered or absence of alcohol in your system.

I would although like to point out that itching is a symptom of an alcohol withdrawal which could have caused the scratch like appearance of the rash you have mentioned possibly when you were asleep or sometime unknowingly.

If you do not mind, please do take an image of the rash you experienced and do attach it to our discussion for my viewing sir. Some times, some symptoms have a more indirect explanation than a direct one.

One example of a scenario: possibly due to alcohol withdrawal you began experiencing itching and because you have been sleeping in a particular position you scratched your face (possibly the same side of your face because you sleep on one side more often). This is only a possible scenario and not my explanation, so please do try to think a little harder why and how exactly the same rash or stripe may have appeared in the very same place.

I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, or with any extra information. I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

I am unsure how to how to attach an image ? As far as the mark , I have experienced no itching or scratching symptoms. And it would be odd to scratch the exact same spot twice ? Also when I quit last time for two weeks within 2 days of resuming drinking the rash disappeared?

Brief Answer:
Very atypical, yet not impossible

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again sir.

Thinking in a more conventional way, I would not say that this is related to alcohol withdrawal, but thinking in a slightly more flexible way, the rash appearing on the exact same location as soon as you discontinue drinking alcohol and then disappearing when you continue drinking alcohol again is very odd and should most probably be related to the alcohol consumption or discontinuation.

In my opinion, alcohol metabolism that usually changes its rate as and when an individual begins to consume more and more alcohol. As you were consuming alcohol on a daily basis your alcohol metabolism was gradually increasing and so it was always at work with metabolising your alcohol consumed. But when you discontinued alcohol consumption it was at a more relaxed state and the metabolism itself could have resulted in the absence of certain by-products of alcohol that were almost always present in your body when you were consuming it. This can at times have a few side effects to it, although very rare but I have read up on this and this could possibly be the reason for the rash like appearance.

Although it is still somehow strange to me that the rash appears in that particular shape and/or size. I would really like to have a look at it. You can attach images to our discussion as there should be an option for you to do the same on this very page.

If not, you can always email the images to the following addresses:

I hope I have explained things in a manner best understood by you sir. Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to be of assistance.

Best wishes sir.
