What Causes Rashes On Face And Neck With Swelling?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Apr 2015
Question: Hi..I have been having "flares" of red, swollen areas on my face and neck. They last for 3-5 days then fade and return within 5 days. I had labs done and I have low WBC, Neutrophils and Absolute Neutrophils with a high Lymphocyte count. I also had an abnormally high Thyroid Perioxidase Antibody and also a Complement CH50 test which came back as abnormally high. Can you help?

Brief Answer:
The problem could be related to auto-immune disease!

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam, thanks for your health query!

After going through your problem and test results, I would clarify following points:

1. You have some allergic/auto-immune /immune complex or anaphylactic reaction that present as these flares and these could be due to following causes:

Medicines/drugs
Thyroiditis
Recurrent microbial infections (usually bacterial)
Autoimmune diseases, including SLE and rheumatoid arthritis
Hereditary angioedema
Acquired angioedema
Various types of kidney disease, including glomerulonephritis, lupus nephritis, membranous nephritis, and IgA nephropathy

Complement protein (CH50 test) levels are usually increased, along with other unrelated proteins called acute phase reactants, during acute or chronic inflammation. These all usually return to normal when the underlying condition is resolved

2. You have low WBC/Neutrophils but high lymphocyte count; this means you have bone marrow involvement by the disease and you have also chronic inflammation..it could be auto-immune thyroiditis as manifested by high Thyroid Perioxidase Antibody

An endocrinologist opinion is necessary for you and then an immunologist; I think your problem is potentially curable but you need some more tests..
