What Causes Rebound Tenderness In Right Lower Abdomen?

default
Posted on Tue, 8 Dec 2015
Question: Hi, My daughter has some rebound pain when she presses on her abdomen and lets go again. She says she has had this for some time - many months but she is a bit unsure as no one pokes her tummy much. She is 16 years old. I am in Australia, its 10 at night. She has just mentioned it. She has no other problems, goes to the toilet Ok, no fever etc. Just checked on the internet and it says it is peritoneal tenderness. No pain only when pressed and let go again. If a large area pressed no pain only when poked. i would like your opinion. Should I take her to A&E tonight or wait to see my GP in the morning.

Brief Answer:
Rebound tenderness in right lower abdomen requires A and E consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. There are many conditions which can cause pain in the abdomen with rebound tenderness. It is important to know the approximate location of the pain she has. Usually a rebound tenderness in the right lower abdomen requires to be evaluated for acute appendicitis. If she is having right lower abdomen pain to the point that she is in tears then going to the A and E tonight is suggested and the doctors will do the ultrasound scan to confirm the probable cause for her pain.

2. If the pain is bearable then you can wait and see the GP in the morning. The causes of an abdomen pain are many and clinical examination with complete investigations are required to know the cause for it.

3. The common causes of pain abdomen other than acute appendicitis include gall bladder stones, kidney stones, gastritis, diverticulitis, lymphnodes, ovarian cysts, infections of the liver, bowel and kidneys, constipation, sub acute bowel obstruction. However some conditions have a particular pattern of tenderness and specific location which is known by clinical examination.

Hope your query is answered.
