Question: Hi, I have had a bad cough now for 3 weeks, a bit up and down with how I feel. I went to the doctors , who told me I had a bad virus. I have been getting tingling in my tongue and now I am still coughing, sometimes it feels like a cold and seems to be going away, but then it comes back again. My cough is very dry and feels like something is tickling my throat. My chest is sore from coughing

Brief Answer:
Correct. Most viral respiratory tract infections require no drugs.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this cough that you have reported. I have reviewed your information fully and this is indeed suggestive of a viral infection: Dry irritative cough that goes on for weeks. The good news is that this requires no specific treatment and generally regresses spontaneously. If the cough episodes and efforts are so many that you have a sore chest, then we may want to suppress using codeine. However, also try not to cough violently so as to avoid soreness. Otherwise, always suppressing cough is not the best idea as it helps prevent unwanted material from the airways. Take tylenol and drink often to relief the irritation and chest soreness.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services.
