What Causes Recurrent Lower Back Pain?

Posted on Thu, 1 Jun 2017
Question: active 18 year old daughter. 5' 9" 130 lbs, Involved in cross country and soccer. 2 years ago traveled to El XXXXXXX to assist in building a home for a poor family. Don't know if that's significant. A year ago began developing symptoms of stomach/abdominal cramps, nausea, sensitive gag reflex, vomiting and now serious constipation. Symptoms have been becoming worse over the past year. In February was diagnosed with H Pilori (sp) and received strong medications to combat that bacteria. Symptoms have not cleared up. Is being seen by a gastrointestinal physician. Has had a scope of the stomach, and a cat scan of her abdominal area. stomach and esophagus were reported as 'pristine' . Cat Scan showed a large amount of stool in the intestines. Has been on 24 micrograms of Amitiza in the am. Was on it 2x per day but would end up having a liquidy bm and not realize it was happening. so the Amitiza was reduced to 1x per day. The diarrhea It was working it's way around the bm in her intestines and not moving the major stuff through. Last weekend in desperation we gave her ducalax. And she indicated she had some movement, and some relief of the pain but is now back and causes her to miss out on her school and sports. This has been going on for months and we are at a loss.

forgot to mention. Has recurrent, significant lower back pain. It seems to increase if she plays soccer or runs. Has never had a back injury.

Brief Answer:
problem in GI tract

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query on HealthcareMagic,

I do understand your concern, noted the upper GI endoscopy report,

As per her clinical history is concerned, do get another physical examination by a Gastroenterologist in your area and s/he may recommend a colonoscopy, where the doctor will view her entire colon using a thin, flexible, lighted tube with attached camera.

During the procedure, your doctor can also take samples of tissue for laboratory analysis, which may help confirm a diagnosis.

Secondly one more test which is very valuable in this condition is capsule endoscopy and for this test she will be given to swallow a capsule that has a camera in it. The camera takes pictures, which are transmitted to a computer.

So this should be sufficient to draw a conclusion about her primary disease and take treatment as per the pathological causes.

Hope that helps
