Question: Child in Orange County, California.... North of all the XXXXXXX County fires. Smoke is considerably noticeable in the area. Child .. 7yo girl.... just overcoming a sinus, chest congestion, constant coughing cold that started a week ago. This morning.... restarted coughing almost non stop.... I think it is from the smokiness in the air. Otherwise, healthy for her first 7 years... no issues. Should I get her one of those puffer things to compensate?

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Sir,

The most likely cause of recurrent nasal congestion appears to be allergic rhinitis. The allergy in majority of the cases is due to dust and smoke in the area. This is a common problem encountered in children. Do not worry things can be taken care off. You can definitely use puffer things like Salbutamol, especially if there is wheezing and bracy cough.

Apart from that i would suggest the following

1. Steam inhalation: It will be a good habit to cultivate. Steam inhalation for 10-15 minutes each session twice a day. Give it regularly even if he is alright. It helps reduce nasal congestion and also clears the nose. You can buy a good quality electronic steamer
2. Monticope suspension: It has antihistaminic and mast cell stabilizer which will help reduce airway hyper reactivity and reduce the incidence of future attacks. It has to be used for 4- 6 months after which it can be stopped. 2.5 mg of Montelukast once daily
3. Wash the bed sheets pillow covers and cloth of baby in hot boiling water: It will remove the dust , mites and allergic substance present in it.
4. Decoction: To a cup of milk + 20 tulsi leaves(Holy basel)+ 1 spoon of turmeric + small piece of ginger + 4 black pepper + 2 spoon of sugar. Bring it to boil. Filter it and feed him warm daily. It will reduce airway congestion and also Tulsi will boost immunity( Follow this if the ingredients are available, Holy basel may be difficult to find in your geogrophical location and can be omitted.)
5. Warm Saline Gargling: To a glass of lukewarm water, add 2 spoons of common table salt. Make the child gargle with it thrice a day
6. One spoon of honey + 2 drops of lime juice, give the child thrice a day. It will provide sothening effect.

Do get back to me for any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.
