What Causes Recurrent Rashes On Scalp, Wrist, Thighs And Legs In Infants?

Question: Hello doctor - my son (5 months old) has been having what appears like rashes / heat burns / boils / heat pricks over the past few weeks. They keep appearing and disappearing on different parts of the body. It has appeared on his scalp, wrist, thighs, cheeks, legs and so on. We are applying calak lotion and he generally does not seem to be in trouble with these. I am attaching a picture of the latest one on his leg that has gone slightly worse (a drop of blood came out from it yesterday). Could you please take a look and suggest if I need to be concerned about this? Thanks much for your advise in advance.

Brief Answer:
Urticaria

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query and photograph.
I can see the skin of leg is slightly raised with a bleeding spot in centre.
This is suggestive of urticaria.
The baby is allergic, probably to mosquito bites or dust.
If you have started giving him food apart from breast milk even that can cause allergy.
For now just apply cortisone cream on the lesion.
This will help in faster healing.
Let me know if you have any other doubt.
Thank you

Thanks for the quick reply doctor. I have a few follow-up questions:

1- I am currently applying Calak (calamine lotion). Is this OK? If not, could you please recommend what is best?

2- We did start giving him food apart from breast milk. We started with Milk Bikis (biscuits) once a day. He is having the biscuits without much of a difficulty. Should we stop this or try another option? Please advise.

3- Because of the bleeding (as i said, a drop came from the bleeding spot yesterday), I was checking on his Tetanus injections. His second dose was given at 4 months (on 11th April 2015). Hope this is OK?

Apart from these, indeed there has been few mosquito bites lately. We are trying to keep him away from these, but is there any precaution that we can do? (any anti repellant lotion recommended? or is he too young to try all those?)

Thanks much again.

Brief Answer:
Fresh fruits

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Calamine is fine but if it doesn't get relieved you can try cortisone or mometasone cream.
Don't use mosquito repellent creams now but definitely you can use mosquito repellent in house.
Try to keep baby in mosquito net most of the time, this will be best.
Don't worry about bleed.
Tetanus injection is not required as he is immunised.
You can try fresh food like boiled potato and fruits instead of biscuit.
Let me know if you have any other doubt.
Thank you
