What Causes Recurring Episodes Of Itchy Sensation On Buttocks And Upper Thighs?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: I seem to be having an allergic reaction of some sort, symptoms started yesterday about 3 hours after a regular lunch meal. Started with itching of my buttocks and upper thighs and then migrated down to very swollen and itchy feet. Then the top of my mouth and uvula began to swell and I went to the ER.

They gave me a 3 shots, a steroid, epinephrine and Benadryl and then sent me home. I woke up at 2:30 AM soaking wet with sweat like I had broken a fever. The symptoms were all gone and other than being awake Imfelt fine. I took 50mg of prednisone this morning 6:00 AM but the symptoms returned At 3:00 PM Any ideas? No dietary changes or atmospheric changes in the last several, weeks. I took anoth 50 mg of prednisone at 3:30 PM and it seems to help no feet or mouth swelling. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Continue antihistamines with the prednisolone

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based on your description of the symptoms it appears to be a hypersensitivity reaction. You should continue the prednisolone along with oral anti histamines such as levocetirizine or desloratidine. I usually prescribe two antihistamines along with prednisolone in severe reactions. If there has been a history of infection in the past week or two, I prescribe levofloxacin course to cover for any bacterial infectious trigger. Consult your doctor before taking these medication. If you experience any voice changes, difficulty in breathing or worsening skin lesions despite the medication then an E.R visit should be repeated to rule out anaphylaxis.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
