Posted on Thu, 7 Jan 2016
Question: I've had hayfever symptoms regularly for which I take anthistamjnes. Ive been experiencing dripping sinus in the back of the throat and excess saliva for some months. Lately I have recurring headaches and pressure between the eyes, behind the nose and in the forehead. I have noticed the area at the back of my upper mouth is yellow and there is a small red spot like a freckle on the skin. What's your thoughts?

Brief Answer:
It seems to be throat and sinus infection. Needs treatment !!!

Detailed Answer:

Thanks for consulting and your trust in HCM means a lot to me as a Physician.
I have completely reviewed your health query, and well realize all those concerns. Being your physician, I will take care all of them today and will extend my expertise to solve the problems.

It seems that you have got Sinus infection alongwith the throat infection. It is named as Sinusitis and Pharyngitis respectively. There is post nasal drip that is hallmark in the sinus infection. Headache and pressure between the eyes, and forehead as described by you are all due to inflammation of the sinuses inner walls that are very sensitive to pain and cause all of this.

You need proper treatment and rest for fast recovery. Avoid dust and animal dander, air pollutants and extremes of weather conditions (cold, hot and humid).
Keep a warm mist humidifier in your room for better respiration and airways will feel an ease with that. You may add Vicks pads in it.
Take plenty of drinking water for keeping yourself well hydrated.

Medication guide:-
AZITHROMYCIN 500mg once daily dose for 7 days , if not allergic to.
ACETAMINOPHEN 625mg three times a day after meals (as it may cause stomach issues like hyperacidity and stomach ulcers) for 3-4 days .
If pain becomes unbearable you may take ACETAMINOPHEN/ASPIRIN/CAFFEINE in combination (1 capsule with meals three times a day by mouth) to replace ACETAMINOPHEN only.
FEXOFENADINE 120mg by mouth Once daily for 7 days .
Gargles with SCOPE or LISTERINE mouthwash.

Note: Please consult your Physician before taking any medications as some medications listed above may cause side effects like Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pains, Somnolence, Flushing of skin or acne. Your Physician may also rule out Hyperacidity in stomach because sometimes that also contributes to symptoms such as throat infection and excess saliva in mouth.

If you feel nothing is working anymore for you, get a thorough evaluation from an ENT Specialist. It may also be due to nasal issues like nasal polyps and nasal septum defects. Treatment then goes accordingly.

Hope I answered all of your queries. Let me know if you have further clinical concerns or doubts. I will be more than happy to get back to you.
For any disease you have, a timely follow-up is necessary regarding the treatment efficacy and to see if there is a need to change the treatment options. So keep a follow up to see how you doing (Always write down my name in start of your questions at this forum & I will be with you in no time).

Brief Answer:
If not allergic to; antibiotics are necessary !!!

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for consulting and your trust in HCM means a lot to me as a Physician. I appreciate the concerns you have and will happily help you out.

It is better to complete a full course of medications aforementioned including Antibiotics. But if your are allergic to some of them you may tell me so that we may have an alternate for that.

If you don't like to go for a doctor visit due to some reason, at least you can take other Over The Counter medicines but still I can never exclude the need for a thorough evaluation because diagnosis after in-person examination is the key to a successful diagnosis and treatment.

Yes take Lukewarm water and add some salt in it to make it saline water and do nasal douches with it for better results and recovery. You may also do gargles with this water.
