What Causes Red Sore Lips?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jun 2018
Question: I am a 62 year old female 5'3 163 lbs my recent blood work: cholesterol slightly high and I need to take calcium with vitamin D
my lips constantly feel on fire, they look sunburned, the skin immediately around my lips is red, the inside of my bottom lip is very bumpy. I look look like I have a wad of chew in my mouth! this has progressively gotten worse over the last 3 years. during the same time I've had a problem with "chicken bump" skin: tiny, very hard, white pimples that seem to itch. when i scratch them they turn into a small red patch. I've asked my doctor, my dentist, and a dermatologist over the last 3 years.
Any help about what kind of doctor to go to would be greatly appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Try vitamin B12 supplements and see if it helps.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Your symptoms seem consistent with neuropathy. I would need to ask you if you are a diabetic. Deficiency of Vitamin B12 could also give rise to such a presentation. Taking methylcobalamine (Vitamin B12) 1500 mcg supplement per day for at least a couple of weeks should help in improving the situation.

As such, the symptoms are under the purview of an internal medicine specialist but you can feel to get an opinion from a neurologist.

Let me know if I could help further.

No I am not diabetic. my older sister was diagnosed with diabetes 2 years ago and is trying to control it with diet and exercise.
Do I take the 1500mcg vitamin B12 in addition to my multi vitamin?

Thank you very much for your input. Now I have an option to find a neurologist if I can't get any relief in the next couple of weeks.
Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
You can stop the multivitamin

Detailed Answer:
I do not suppose that a multivitamin would help. You can stop it. However, if you feel, taking both along will not be an issue.

Feel free to ask me back if you have any health related queries.
