Brief Answer:
Mild soft tissue injury likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The mild swelling and red spot above the knee can be due to a soft tissue injury in the area. This does not seem to be a serious injury. It is likely to subside with rest and cold compress. You can wrap an elastic bandage for an extra support while walking.
In case the swelling increases or there is a sudden sharp pain on walking then an internal injury to the knee joint is likely. In that case it is best to consult an orthopedician for a detailed examination.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.

So far Dr. Tayal no pain at all. is that different or the same as a sprain or strain ? If i dont have a bandage, is a knee brace with a hole in the middle ok ?

Brief Answer:
Likely to be simple strain or sprain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
It can be a sprain or strain. A knee brace with a hole in the middle can be used for relief. Doing a cold compress will also help.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Thank you doctor!! Lyou mentioned earlier that if I feel a sharp pain or increased swelling there might be an internal injury. When should I expect that , like if it doesnt happen within the first 24 hours then it is just sprain or strain? If it were a serious injury would the strong pain be immediate ? Thanks again Doctor you are the best

Brief Answer:
Wait for 2-3 days.

Detailed Answer:
If there is no sharp pain or swelling in 2-3 days then it is likely to be a sprain only. Do avoid bearing weight on the knee till then. In a serious injury there is an immediate pain and feeling of something tearing inside.
