Question: Hi i have been having protected sex, but recently the a red raw area has appeared below the head of my penis. It seems to heal up and get flaky but every time i have sex using a condom or masturbate it seems to flare up, and may be getting worse. When i dont do either and it begins to "heal" it almost blends in, but after sex it looks red, puffy almost like athletes foot. what is wrong with me? please help

Brief Answer:
Balanitis due to irritants or condom allergy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.

You had protected sex. So the possibilities of STD/HIV are unlikely.
The pictures sent by you reveal that you are having Balanitis. (inflammation of Glans penis). It may be due to
1. Irritants-- soaps, antiseptics or other topical applications
2. Allergic to Condom
3. Certain other skin conditions like Genital Psoriasis or other balanitis of some rare varieties and pre-malignant conditions - Histo-pathology may be needed.
4. Infection due to unprotected oral sex.

As you mentioned that it heals with abstinence, it indicates it may likely to be due to either irritants or condom allergy.

If the sexual abstinence is not adequate for a complete healing, it likes to be relapsed. Sometimes repeated washing with plain water helps to heal.
Consult a Dermato-Venereologist and follow his advise.

Today is the day after my last sexual encounter. I did wear a condom. Today the spot is slightly crusted over but not quite as red. Just wanted to make sure your diagnosis is unchanged. i would also like to inform you that i have had unprotected sex in the past which is a contributing factor to why i am so worried about this now. I have uploaded this mornings pictures.

Brief Answer:
Healing under progress.Abstinence helps healing.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Welcome back.
Yes the crusting and scaling is obvious. It denotes healing process is on going. You just leave the lesion without any applications. Simple washing with water is enough. Sexual abstinence is a must for 7- 10 days.
It would heal spontaneously and seems just an abrasion during sex act.
If it recurs after sometime, a biopsy may be essential to arrive at an exact diagnosis.
