default
Posted on Wed, 15 Jul 2015
Question: I have a 2 year old daughter that has redness and itching in genital area. Diaper cream is not working. I believe she has a yeast infection or UTI. She was on antibiotics for over 2 weeks for recurring ear infections. What can I use?

Thank you

Brief Answer:
add a topical antifungal and hydrocortisone

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is more likely a yeast or other fungal infection.

A UTI would be accompanied by systemic symptoms such as fever, loss of appetite, discomfort on urination ( due to infection of the urinary tract not due to itching/scratching of area), frequent urination, change in odor or appearance of urine.

The diaper cream would provide barrier protection to prevent the area from being further irritated from contact with urine or stool but you need to consider adding a topical antifungal/topical steroid combination.

The topical steroid like hydrocortisone , which is mild and available over the counter, would help reduce the inflammation and itching. Use sparingly for 3 to 4 days.

The topical antifungal would help with the infection eg nizoral, econazole, ketoconazole, miconazole.
It can sometimes take more than a week for a fungal infection to resolve.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
