What Causes Redness And Itching Of Penis?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Sep 2014
Question: Hi. I had redness on the left side of my penis head yesterday with itching. I also realized "accumulation" of skin just below the penis head on the same side. I used anti fungal gel (miconazole) this morning. The itching was gone but I realized after couple of hours a big bubble / blister (no fluid inside) just below the head where skin was accumulated, and the blister deflated thereafter. Evening itching started again, so i used miconazole after shower and itching is gone. I did not have any sex for the last 10 fays or so. I wash with soap 3-4 times a day, after urinating, and i shower at least once per day. Please advise. Attached is a photo taken after the blister deflated diring the day.

Brief Answer:
Possibility of FDE

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query. I have also looked at the image.

I would keep a possibility of Fixed Drug Eruption(FDE). However in order to substantiate my diagnosis I would like to gather more information from you.

-Do you have any history of preceding drug intake( in the last 7 days) before the onset of redness, itching and blister formation?

Fixed drug eruption, as the name indicates the eruption is 'fixed' in its location. Intake of the culprit drug causes it to either reappear or become prominent exactly at the same location. A lot of commonly usde drugs can cause this kind of eruption e.g commonly used pain killers/antipyretics/antibiotics etc which are commonly prescribed for cold, flu, diarrhea/dysentry etc cause most of the cases of FDE.

From the image I would rule out herpes genitalis, totally. It does'nt look classical candida either, though I may still consider it once I have ruled out FDE.

Thank you Dr. In fact, I had intake of Fasigyn on Friday night (1g). i started having itching on Saturday morning. As of now, the blister is limited to skin accumulation.

Brief Answer:
FDE it is!!

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Thanks for the additional information. So here is the cause!!FLASIGYN or Tinidazole. It is a very common cause of FDE.

I would suggest you to avoid it in future.

You can apply a topical steroid cream to this area e.g Dipgenta cream (contains clobetasol propionate+neomycin) twice daily.

A short course of an oral steroid e.g Tab. Zempred 16 mg once daily after breakfast for 7 days would be rapidly effective.

Regards
