What Causes Redness Of The Scrotal Skin After Using Betadine And Neosporin?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Jul 2015
Question: I've been dealing with a bout of balanitis and have been treating it with the advice I got from a urologist on this site using betadine and neosporin. It seems to be working, but I've just noticed recently that my scrotum skin is very red. There is no pain or itchiness associated with it which I've read is usually the case, but it definitely is not normal. I've read its called red scrotum syndrome but there doesn't seem to be a consensus on the cause or treatment, though it doesn't seem to have serious side effects beyond some possible pain (which I have not noticed yet). I'm going to see if I can get an appointment with a urologist but the wait is usually fairly long so I'd like to see if I can do anything about it now and if I should worry. I have a frenulectomy scheduled on July 23rd (originally had it scheduled for the 29th but had to push it back due to balanitis) so I'd like to see if I can get this solved by then (or if it would affect whether I can get the surgery or not).

Thank you for any help.

Brief Answer:
It should be an allergic reactine. Avoid Betadine.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX and welcome to HCM.
You definitely have an allergic reaction, most likely due to the repeated Betadine wash.As an Urologist, it's seen in many patients. You stop using the Betadine.
Neosporin may be used over the front part or glans, only if you still have any changes seen earlier during the visit to the Urologist.
Forget the scrotal syndrome.Don't worry about it. Keep the scrotal skin dry. Don't allow any moisture to remain there. Gradually, new skin will cover up the entire scrotal skin.If the skin is itching or burning sensation is severe, you'll need to see a doctor or skin specialist.
Frenulectomy is done only if , that fold of skin is causing a bend over the glans , which is giving you a problem, cosmetic or functionally.
Wish you a speedy recovery.

If it's an allergic reaction are there any allergy medications that can help me? I take Allegra-D during the day and Benadryl at night because of my hay fever, will any drugs like those help?

Brief Answer:
Allegra-D is enough.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
Allegra-D is an anti-allergic medication, which should suffice. You don't need another medicine.Keeping the area moisture free is most important. Then let nature replace it with new skin, so wait it out.
