I read your question and i understand your concern. Bright red toes in the morning at age of 74 are likely due to some joint problem of arthritis ( age related articular degeneration) that can cause this redness and toe brightness. Apart from it, mere skin condition like eczema, dermatitis , some vascular issue like raynaud's can cause this too. Insect bites can also present this way .
