What Causes Reduced Appetite, Watery Vaginal Discharge, Bloating, Pelvic Pain And Fatigue?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Dec 2015
Question: Over the past six weeks I have had the following symptoms:
-decreased appetite (lost 6 pounds)
-excessive watery vaginal discharge
-bloating
-fatigue
-pelvic pain on the lower right
-increase in cervical mucus

I went to my GP for a well-woman exam and Pap, she said that I had a small/Grade 1 (?) uterine prolapse, and a small bit of uterine tissue was visible. She did urine labs, and said there was some bacteria and leuko...something.

She said that it was likely a UTI and to come back if things didn't improve in 6 weeks. I'm concerned because I'm generally very healthy and all of these things began around the same time and are not improving, and I cannot contribute them to any particular point in my cycle. Should I seek a second opinion or just wait?

Brief Answer:
You are right, uterine prolapse is the cause for your entire presentation

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. If at all you were diagnosed with uterine prolapse, then the UTI is clearly because of the uterine prolapse. What happens in a uterine prolapse is the weakening of pelvic floor muscles resulting in the uterus dropping down and being exposed (how much depends on the grade) to the external environment.

The normal uterus needs to be within and not exposed to the external environment, this exposure can result in the development of infections due to exposure to bacteria. So you are correct when you say that all of this started at the same time. But please understand that the cause and source is one, and that is the uterine prolapse.

So treatment for the prolapse will be the solution for all your symptoms, and so please do speak to your doctor about the solution and treatment options. Please also feel free to write to me for any clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

Thank you, Dr. XXXXXXX that makes sense. Would that explain the pain and watery discharge as well? It's terribly embarrassing to discuss, however very distressing. I'm 31, physically fit, and normally healthy. I run 4 times a week but have had to curtail that recently since when I start to run the watery discharge becomes intolerable. The dull ache and bloating/fullness are irritating too, I feel 2 months pregnant.

Is there anything I can do, in the interim before I see my GP again, to help alleviate these symptoms?

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics would have helped, but here are a few other suggestions

Detailed Answer:
Hi ma'am.

Yes the watery discharge and pain can be related to both the prolapse as well as the UTI. The best thing you can do until you meet your GP would have been to take antibiotics, but unfortunately your GP seems to have diagnosed you but not initiated a course of antibiotics which is the first thing he/she should have done.

As we do not have that, I would recommend only general things like:

+Drink plenty of fluids
+Abstain from sexual contact in all forms
+Wear a pad and change them frequently
+Drink cranberry juice as tolerated
+Avoid all physical activities that can aggravate your symptoms
+Take a shower at least once a day
+Go about sitz baths with epsom salt at least 3-4 times a day
+Take antacids that may help
+Avoid tea, coffee, carbonated drinks, spicy food, oily food, fried food, stale food, etc.
+Warm compress over your abdomen

These suggestions will only cumulatively help you to a certain extent. But please also note that your abdominal bloating/fullness is due to a hormonal imbalance that has resulted from the UTI (mainly), and the prolapse (secondarily).

Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.
