What Causes Rib Pain While Sleeping?

default
Posted on Sat, 10 Sep 2016
Question: I have lower back pain issues since many years. I got myself checked multiple times, almost everytime the doctors said since I work on a desk job and sit for long hours that's why the issue is there.
Now since last 3 months , when I sleep , I get pain in my ribs. Once I get up, the pain subsides in sometime. Its only when I sleep, the rib pains occur.
Also since last 3 days I am having pain in both my thighs on outer side at the same spot in both the legs.

Kindly suggest what could be the issue of all this pain.

Brief Answer:
you need to get clinically examined and investigated thoroughly ..

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX Welcome to HCM,

I've gone through your query and understand your concern,

No, hypothyroidism has nothing to do with this..

Please don't get disheartened to hear this, but even though you've been checked out by doctors, for several times over the past few years, still you need proper further detailed check-up by a Neurologist (specifically) and a few specific investigations in this regard too..

Yes, I agree with your previous doctors that desk job and prolonged sitting can be a responsible and aggravating factor in this regard, still it demands a proper diagnosis..

Your symptoms are quite suggestive of nerve-root compression around the lumbo-sacral region, and since it's started over the lower limbs, I'd strongly suggest for a detailed consultation with a Neurologist along with a few relevant investigations (eg. CBC, calcium, phosphorus, Vit-D3, vit B-12, X-ray of L-S spine and/ MRI of the L-S spine) without any further delay..

Let me know if you any further assistance in this regard(finding the right relevant Doctor or anything else), I'll be glad to help you out..

Please don't delay any further and get these done, treatment as well further management is specifically based on clinical features and relevant findings of those investigation..

Let me know how you stay in the due course..

Take Care of yourself XXXXXXX
Kind Regards

I got my MRI done and i have uploaded the report for your reference. I have also attached the prescription of the doctor that lists the medicines for next 7 days.
I will receive my blood test reports today in evening.

Please provide your opinion on the MRI report and let me know how severe/serious is the issue.

Brief Answer:
follow-up consultation..

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX Welcome Back,

I've reviewed the MRI report as well as the Doctor's prescription, yes you can continue the analgesic along with Neksium for next 7 days, it'll provide some symptomatic relief..

It's not appearing to be any Neurologist's prescription though, feel free to share..

However, since there's evidence of mild disc bulging at L4-L5 along with disc herniation at L5-S1 level, I'd strongly suggest you to schedule an appointment with a Neurologist for a proper, detailed clinical examination followed by management (as of now it's conservative only, but you'll be needing long term follow-up with the neurologist)..

If after clinical examination there's any element of entrapment neuropathy is found (which is the most likely cause of your back-pain and radiation to the lower limbs), then you'll be needing to take medications like Gabpentin/ Pregabalin/ Tizanidine for long term basis..

Don't worry, it's not that severe, but definitely a chronic as well as progressive ailment, that's why there's need for long term follow-up.. please discuss with the Neurologist regarding Back physiotherapy under supervision of a physiotherapist, as it'll certainly provide you relief over a period of time..

Yes, Blood investigations reports will be helpful too..

Let me know how you stay in the due course..

Take Care
Kind Regards
