Question : I have had ringing in my left ear for 5 plus years now. lately I have been hearing what sounds like a small gas engine running in the back ground and when I cover my right ear I don't here that the sound. What do you think is going on? Thanks!

Ringing in ear or tinnitus may have several causes that include exposure to loud noise, earwax blockage, otosclerosis, Ménière's, acoustic neuroma, atherosclerosis, vascular malformation, side effects of drugs, etc.

It is necessary to get evaluated by an ENT Doctor and by tests such audiology tests and imaging of brain (MRI) in order to get a correct diagnosis.
