Question: Woke up this morning with loud ringing in one of my ears and can not hear out of that ear. Don't feel sick. Head not stuffy. Went to bed just fine last night. How can I treat this? Took antihistamine with decongestant doesn't help.

Brief Answer:
would need to be assessed by an ENT as soon as you can

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The prognosis for recovery of some or all of hearing in sudden onset hearing loss is good.

Causes include: (1) viral infection but you have no symptoms indicating infection
(2) compromise of blood supply to the ear- a clot or spasm of the blood vessels to certain aspect of the ear
(3)iron deficiency anemia increases the risk of sudden onset hearing loss
(4)rupture of delicate membranes in the ear, not the ear drum everyone knows about but membranes that are present in other areas
(5)trauma to the ear
(6)side effect of certain medications
(7)presence of a mass
(8)idiopathic- cause not known, in the vast majority of persons , the cause is not found
(9)some autoimmune conditions

Hearing tests are mandatory to assess the hearing. Blood tests may also be suggested but would be based on relevant history eg if any evidence of infection-a full blood count
If autoimmune suspected blood tests for lupus, RA and others done

Imaging may or may not be needed

It would be best to see an ENT doctor as soon as you are able for assessment

If a definite cause can be found on examination and assessment then that is specifically treated.

If no definite cause can be found then meds such as medications to increase blood flow, reduce inflammation or prevent clotting , may be used

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
