What Causes Scratchy Throat, Nose Congestion And Cough?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 Jan 2015
Question: I got sick on friday about one a.m. with vomiting and then diarrhea chills and fatigue. this lasted throughout the day and into Saturday m I was seen by doctor who told me I had stomach virus and to drink plenty of fluids and rest. Sunday I woke up without any stomach issues but had scratchy throat and congestion going from back of nose down throat causing a cough...
my question is is this a different virus? Is it dangerous to have one virus right after the other? Sickness has been going around and I do have young kids. also I have pvcs normally but since being sick they have been somewhat worse. is thos normal to jave more during sickness?

Brief Answer:
Latest status is not typical of viral infection...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

As per you, the latest symptoms are scratchy throat, congestion at the back of nose and cough without fever, malaise and generalised body ache. In absence of associated prodromal complaints, I don't suspect a fresh viral infection.

When a person vomits, undigested food and acidic gastric contents are capable of causing nasopharyngeal (throat and back of nose) irritation which can mimick those symptoms. It can get inflammed and infected if symptoms persist leading to fever. But as you aren't febrile yet, perhaps this is just the after effects of vomiting. So don't bother about fresh viral infection. Try throat lozenges and saline water gargles. I would also use antacids to keep stomach acid secretions down. This should give some time for throat to heal.

And yes, stress factors associated with usual infection can worsen PVC's to some extent. You need to consider review with your cardiologist if the PVC don't settle down in the next few days.

That being said, just to complete my answer, I shall anyway answer your individual questions here:
1. I don't feel this is a fresh viral infection based on what you just described.
2. It is not uncommon to find 2 or more viral infection in a short period of time. This is attributed to short life span of immunity to those viruses. And such recurring viral infection is not usually dangerous.
3. As I said earlier, it is not uncommon to see PVC flare-ups during sickness.

Hope I am clear. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Regards
