What Causes Seeing Greenish Hue After A Daytime Nap?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 May 2014
Question: The last two times I've awoken from a daytime nap, my color vision was abnormal. If I look at a human face, it's green from the neck up. All other color is normal, save the face of the individual I am looking at. It stays like this for several seconds, then the green fades to a normal color. What is this?

Brief Answer:
This can be transient ischemia.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
It seems from the history that after waking up from a day time nap you are having the problem of seeing greenish hue which will become normal over several seconds.
This is usually because of transient ischemia or as a result of dark to bright light adaptation As you get up and see the bright light you will green to black hue because of this and vision will become normal as the retinal circulation or dark adaptation becomes normal.
If you are having recurrent attacks of this type then you require evaluation by a physician to rule out causes for transient ischemia like hypotension or anemia.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

Thank you

A TIA? A mini-stroke? I don't understand how that can be it. My BP was normal and no colors were effected, save one human face. The first occasion it occurred, I awoke to my grandsons face and it was green from the neck up. I looked at his mother and she was normal. I looked back at my grandson and his face was still green. The second time, it was his mother who's face was green and he was normal. I closed and opened my eyes several times and she stayed green, until it finally faded away. Just too strange, and I don't like it. : )

Brief Answer:
This is not TIA or ministroke.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam
Thank you for the follow up.

This is not because of TIA or XXXXXXX stroke, this is only because of transient ischemia causing delayed adaptation from darkness to light.
Transient ischemic attacks will present with complete black outs of vision with dizziness and usually indicate a underlying serious cause affecting the blood vessels like carotid artery diseases, vasculitis...
No need to worry this is not a TIA, it is just a transient ischemia just causing momentary greesnish or grayish hue because of delayed adaptation.
Hence no need to worry other than correction of hypotension or anemia if any. If no underlying systemic cause is present then you need one eye examination to look for age related causes which affect the contrast sensitivity.

Hope the information is helpful to you.
