What Causes Seeing Of Tiny Flashes In Vision?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Question: Hi, I have an Xact stent in my L internal carotid artery after a 2cm dissection on 8/25/14. I'm on Coumadin (last INR was 2.8 two days ago), Gabapentin (pretty bad neck pain), Verapamil, and Xanax. When my tear occurred during a triathlon I saw tiny flashes of light which Neuro said were probably tiny blood clots passing through my field of vision. They said I might continue to see these which I have but rarely and only one or two at a time. Yesterday while cleaning I saw two flashes of light and then part of my vision in my left eye was grayed out for 3 to 5 seconds. I believe it must have been a tiny emboli released from my carotid area that broke up quickly due to the Coumadin. I've had scatomas in my right eye but this was different. Is this part of the stent implantation process? I'm seeing my PCP on 10/14 and thought maybe an US would be good to check for restenosis. I'm an NP and listen for a bruit but don't hear one. My next Neuro appointment with CTA is 11/24. I feel okay other than chronic neck pain and on occasion head pain. BP is good too.

Brief Answer:
Agree with your thinking.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your past details and current symptoms.

These transient visual symptoms are most likely due to tiny emboli in the ophthalmic branch of carotid artery. You are on adequate anticoagulation as per your INR report.

Therefore, there is no need to worry. Please continue the same treatment.

You can continue with your follow up appointments as scheduled.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
