What Causes Sensation Of Smooth Lump Under Left Underarm?

default
Posted on Fri, 28 Aug 2015
Question: I feel a smooth, ovoid lump under my left underarm...I was thinking it was just a lymph node, but this is more in the shape of a piece of cooked Orzo rice-shaped pasta than a little knot like a lymph node. Not sure if it's attached to anything underneath, but the top part of it seems distinct from surrounding tissues. I'm 48, going through menopause and haven't had my period since November 2014....I have been feeling some breast tenderness and slight uterine cramping off and on for a couple days now so I've wondered if I might have a period coming, haven't felt anything like that for months, but it's pretty identical to what I generally could expect when I had regular periods. Additionally, on the other underarm, at essentially the same spot I can indeed find a lymph node, just wondering why this one feels oblong rather than more round. Never noticed that before. My maternal aunt had breast cancer in her late 40s, early 50s, so I'm on alert.

Brief Answer:
Needs investigations, tissue diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
You have explained the problems so well that the need of further investigations has become imperative.

I would advise in such a case the following:
Mammography.
Ultrasonography and guided FNAC.
Clinical evaluation and examination by a General Surgeon or Oncosurgeon.
Excision biopsy if deemed necessary by them.

This is important to get a tissue diagnosis at the earliest to decide whether this is a benign disease or a malignant one.

Once a proper diagnosis has been made, it will be easy to carry on further treatment, if needed and become stress-free.

I hope this answer helps you to get proper and early diagnosis.

I have a mammogram scheduled, but the earliest date I could get is October 10 and that's months away. Should I push for an earlier date? What would you advise me to tell them to get it moved up?
