Question : Hi. I am currently experiencing sporadic sensation of tasting blood at the back of my throat when I swallow. Background: - Starting around Oct / Nov last year I started seeing blood in my nose mucus and also when I cough. Had it checked by both an ENT and pulomonologist. My chest /lung X-rays came out clear (as of Nov) and my naso-pharnyx CT scan (as of XXXXXXX this year) also came out clear-- indication was for chronic rhinosinusitis. - bleeding from nasal mucus still occurs sporadically but has greatly minimized. However these days I noticed that blood taste in the back of my throat and I wonder if it's related. Usually happens when I cough. Is it possible it's a separate condition that could be serious?

Brief Answer: Unlikely to be blood Detailed Answer: Dear Friend. Hi , I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern. Chronic rhinosinusitis if severe can itself cause bleeding from nose. If there were no nasal polyps documented by your doctor, it's fine you just need to observe daily Steam inhalation and a dose of Levocetrizine 5mg once a day. i would like to add that you should get following investigations to see for the cause of bleeding and to rule out associated disorders like Wegner's Granulomatosis: 1. Hemogram with ESR and CRP 2. Xray chest and PNS 3. PT/INR 4. XXXXXXX 5. KFT AND URINE for Albumin. Also there is a possibility that you have post nasal drip!! It is very unlikely that what you are feeling tricking down your throat is blood. If it is blood then you would get it in your saliva. Get the above advised investigations and review. This is my personal opinion based on details available here. If you still have any query you may please ask me. Stay Healthy. Dr Anshul Varshney , MD
