What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain After Partial Colon Removal?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Dec 2014
Question: Hi! In 2013, my daughter had to have three feet of colon removed due to the fact that it was twisting. The three feet was extra, so she still has the normal 5 feet of colon left. So this past summer (2014), she again had pain and it was found that she had scar tissue, so that was removed. The surgeon said that there would be pain during the healing process and the pain could exist for up to a year. Now, it's November and the pain has gotten worse. My daughter says that it is like someone is squeezing her lower abdomen and above the belly button also. She has had to go gluten free. Was tested for Celiac's disease but hadn't eaten gluten beforehand, so the test came out negative. My stepdaughter has celiac's disease. What could be causing my daughter's bad pain?

Brief Answer:
Scar= adhesion- subacute intestinal obstructions

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.

It looks your daughter suffered from volvulus of the sigmoid colon and removal of the redundant colon is a procedure of choice.

It is possible that your daughter now is suffering from adhesions with sub-acute intestinal obstruction causing all the symptoms she has.

I would suggest in such a patient the following:
First of all - Plain X-ray of the abdomen in standing position when she is in pain.
Enteroclysis - a form of barium study under fluoroscopy control (Direct visualization while the XXXXXXX is passing through the intestines.

This will give the idea about how much is the effects of the adhesion and impact on the intestinal flow; the site and size of the obstruction and a probable cause.

I think another surgery may be needed , if the reports indicate so.
Adhesion are due to body's own over-response of healing and are known to be recurrent in patients who have developed it once.

What are the other symptoms she has ?

I hope this answer helps you understanding the probable problem, please feel free to ask for more if you need to.
