Question : My father in law went to the ER in severe pain believing his appendix had burst. It hadnt- it was stage 4 colon cancer spread to liver and inoperable. My question is: why did it cause that severe pain? What is average prognosis if chemo is taken

Sub acute bowel obstruction

Detailed Answer:
Hi

The severe pain in your father in laws case could be due to sub acute bowel obstruction caused by the stage 4 colon cancer.

I would advise you to do a straight x ray of the abdomen

Conservative treatment has to be given.

With chemotherapy average survival time is around 3 years.
