What Causes Severe Anxiety After Switching From Yaz To Gianvi?

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Oct 2015
Question: Last year, I had to switch from Yaz to the generic form of it, Gianvi. I started having extreme anxiety. I attributed it to the birth control and the way the formulation of the pill affected my body. Either way, I have now stopped birth control pills, and the anxiety is better, but I still have bouts when the anxiety comes on strong. For other times, a week at a time, say, I feel fine. I think this is all hormonal. Is it progesterone or estrogen that would more likely effect the anxiety? I would like to go back on BCPs, but I want to take one that works well for anxiety and that won't exacerbate my symptoms. I have PCOS, which is why I want to go back on the pill. I have had very painful cysts every month, 2 months, since I went off the pill. I went to a psychiatrist for the anxiety and he prescribed Xanax. I had only taken two pills in one month when I went back to see him because I'm scared of getting addicted, but could have used more pills. He told me he didn't need to see me anymore. Basically, if I felt like if I wasn't using drugs, he didn't want to help me. I have buspirone that I haven't started taking yet prescribed from my nurse practitioner, but I feel like if I can fix the hormone problems, I might not need to take it.

Brief Answer:
progesterone is a calming hormone.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.

I can understand your concerns.

Birth control pills can sometime cause mood swings and anxiety.
Its unfortunate that you developed so strong anxiety from BCPs that you had to resort to anti-anxiety drugs.

In my opinion, progesterone is a calming hormone. Excess estrogen can sometime cause anxiety.

I think progesterone-only-pills should suit you better. Kindly discuss this with your gynecologist/doctor.

Regarding anxiety, if it still persists, I would suggest that you can take buspirone(as directed). This is a non-habit forming drug and should help you to control anxiety. Once your symptoms are settled, you can stop the drug.

You can also try relaxation exercises like deep breathing and meditation for anxiety.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to ask further.

Thanks.

Thank you for your answer. I started taking the buspirone. I have a question about the prescription. I was told to take it three times a day, but because it makes me dizzy about a half hour after taking it, I only want to take it at night. I really only get anxious in the mornings before work. By around noon, my anxiety is usually gone. If I just take it at night around 10 pm, will it still be working at around 6-8 the following morning to help me get through the morning, or is this a medicine that has to be taken three times a day for efficacy? I have 5 mg pills. Could I take three of them at night instead of three of them throughout he day? Or would one at night eventually keep the anxiety at bay? I have been taking one pill at night for three days now. I still feel anxiety in the morning.

Brief Answer:
can adjust the schedule accordingly.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Good to hear from you again.

You have anxiety only in morning.

I think you can take all the three tablets in night at bedtome and observe the effects. If it works for you, you can continue with this regime.

Buspirone has short half life of 2-3 hours and the effect varies from person to person.

If three tablets in night does not work enough for you, you can take one tablet in morning as soon as you are awake and two tablets in night.

I believe that either of the strategy should work for you.

Here I must tell you that buspirone takes 2-3 weeks to show its effects. If you have just started the drug, expect some respone only after 2-3 weeks.

Keep your doctor informed about any dose/drug changes you make.

Hope this helps.
Feel free to ask further.

I wish you well.
Thanks.

Thank you so much for your reply! I will take your dosing suggestions into consideration, but before I do, I have one more dosing question. Would it eventually be effective if I only take 5 mg of buspirone in the morning? Or is that dose too low to ever build up enough in my system to be effective? You said that it takes two to three weeks for it to work, so I was just wondering if it would ever work taking it that way.

Brief Answer:
the starting dose is 5mg three times a day.

Detailed Answer:
You are most welcome.

The starting dose of buspirone is 5mg three times a day.

But as you have mentioned that your anxiety is only troublesome in morning, so I think that this dosing regimen (5mg in morning and 10mg in night) should help you.

The dose may be sufficient for you.
It can however be increased/decreased depending on the response after discussing with your doctor.

Hope this helps.

I wish for your speedy recovery.

Thanks.

Is a side effect of buspirone /low blood sugar? I feel like I have been more hungry since I've been taking it and like my blood sugar may be dropping low.

Brief Answer:
not due to buspirone.

Detailed Answer:
In my opinion, this is not the side effect of buspirone.

It may be due to your birth control pills.

Kindly talk to your doctor about this.

Take care.
