What Causes Severe Bleeding Under The Skin, Right Abdominal Pain And Muscle Weakness?
Question: I cant seem to find anyone interested in solving the cause of my numerous symptoms, particularly severe bleeding under the skin. Insurance prevents any doctor from spending more than 8-10 minutes with and my symptoms cant be discussed in that length of time. I have multiple medical issues but the great mystery is the cause of my bleeding. I have 9 out of the top 10 for liver disease but my basic liver function tests come back borderline or normal.

Bleeding can be due to many causes and we need to know the major system that is at fault, whether it is platelet problem, vessel problem or coagulation related problem.

could you please be more specific about which blood tests and coagulation studies you would like to know? I have some medical training so I can understand most technical language. I dont know what liver problems your are referring to. Do you mean which symptoms do I have? If so, my 9 symptoms are: itching not related to skin issues, yellowish skin but dont know if I have jaundiced eye whites, upper Right abdominal pain next to ribcage, muscle weakness, nausea occasional vomiting, lower leg swelling with visible finger imprint, confusion, sudden and pronounced belly bloat. I have Factor V Leiden mutation and went from a clotting time of 1 minute to 8 minutes. My BUN runs borderline,ALT and AST, occasional low albumin, total bilirubin has been occasionally off but it has been normal for last year. I will send along a photo if I can. The quantity of bleeding varies also though it has never stopped completely. Right now its quite severe. My hands are completely covered right now. I have it most on arms and legs with occasional face and throat bruising.

I wanted to add though that I had an undiagnosed viral syndrome in Nov 2011, which coincided with severe, life threatening anemia with platelets down to about 85,000. Thank you for your detailed reply. I can understand you are going through a lot and it is very brave of you to describe every problem in detail.
As far as bleeding goes, it seems very unusual as you have Factor V leiden mutation which predisposes to thrombus formation or what we call reverse of excessive bleeding. However, your problems need to be evaluated. It would be nice to review your bleeding of your hands and other parts, if you can upload a photo. The common primary tests that we order for bleeding problems are platelet count, Prothrombin time and Activated partial thromboplastin Time. Then based on the results of these tests we determine the future tests.
It seems many of your symptoms can be seen in Liver problems. If bilirubin is normal jaundice is unlikely but yellowish skin can be seen in various conditions especially when carotene is high such as in hypothyroidism. Low tiredness and muscle weakness can also be seen in thyroid illnes.
So along with a fresh array of liver function tests like ALT, AST and GGT, TSH is also recommended if not already done.
Please do upload the photos of your hands and legs so that I can make a better recommendation for your condition.
