Posted on Mon, 29 Jun 2015
Question: My 80 year old husband who really is about 65 in all areas.... he had stage one cancer of the larynx and was given 35 radiation treatments, the last one was given on 4/15/2015. he has since had a "scope" done by ent doctor, problem now is he is extremely tired which is understandable and he can rest and sleep whenever he want and does so. problem is he has this "horrific" cough that will not go away, when he coughs, it is so bad, I almost feel like our house is coming off the foundation, and naturally it wears him out thoroughly. he has resumed some of his many duties, like working outside, mowing grass and managing our 4 acres of beautiful flowers, landscaping, planting small trees, etc. can you please address this cough or tell us how long it can be expected to last or is there anything that can be bought for him to take or eat, or what he can do to help any if possible. The cough is really frightening and he gets them anytime day or night, awake or sleeping...doctor has been told. email = YYYY@YYYY

Welcome dear!

Thanks for consulting me at virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and I can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I assure you not to worry as I will take care all of your husband's medical concerns.

When we put in a Bronchoscope, sometimes a complication happens and that is, the inner lining of the pharynx and larynx is avulsed with instrument. Its called Iatrogenic injury. And leads to infection, irritation and cough.
My recommendation is Azithromycin 500mg per oral once daily for 10days. Tablet loratadine OTC 1 daily for 7days. Any OTC cough syrup 2TSF twice daily.
His weakness is due to the Cancer Cachexia. Its logical. Otherwise he is doing very well.
