What Causes Severe Depression In An Elderly Person While On Allopurinol And Lexapro?

Question : My husband told me he is experiencing urgency and pain at the meatus during urination plus having a small BM after urinating. He is 62 years old with a history of gout and depression.. Medications are allopurinol and lexapro. We are sexually active but for travel and sickened reasons had a sexual dryspell of a couple weeks. His symptoms started after we had intercourse for the first time after the dry spell . I,as his wife will say I have had no other sexual partners since 1972. His last "0ther" sexual partner was in 1980. He denies any other sexual partner since then. He denies malodorous urine,hematuria, and any drainage from his penis. I am an ED nurse but am baffled by the BM issue. He has had no back injury and denies back pain. Not sure what to tell him to do.

Welcome. I have gone through your query.
Based on the information provided by you it appears like urinary tract infection.

I would have asked for urine routine examination and based on the report I would have decided on the need of antibiotic. I usually in my clinic, treat patients of UTI with Norflox 400 mg twice daily for 3 days.

Presently I would suggest you to drink plenty of water, which will to wash off the microbes from urinary tract and also to drink cranberry juice which is found to be beneficial in UTI.

Thank-you. I thought that as well but was thrown off by his need to defecate a small amount each time he urinates. He will follow up with his urologist.

UTI, or burning micturation, may sometime cause urge to defecate, addressing UTI, should show improvement in his symptoms.
I would suggest you to go for the tests suggested in earlier post, and based on the report, we can decide on the management.
