What Causes Severe Diarrhea?

default
Posted on Sat, 20 Dec 2014
Question: My mother in law is 82 years old. she has had severe diarrhea for 3 1/2 months. she has lost over 15 pounds. She had a battery of tests and was prescribed Zenpep. She took about 3 pills one before each meal and had violent reactions where she could barely make it to the bathroom with diarrhea. She continued to drink wine during this time too. She has now stopped the medication. My concern is that I know she drinks a bottle of wine a night and has not discussed this with her doctor. I feel it's important for the doctor to know as it could be causing her condition or a the least exacerbating it. Am I wrong?

Brief Answer:
You are correct, wine exaggerates diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Hello

My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. Wine causes irritation of gut lining(villi) or spasm of wall as a result absorption of food does not occur causing diarrhea. So mostly i recommend my patients to avoid it in diarrhea. As your mother has chronic diarrhea problem so she should be extra careful with this regard and should avoid it.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
