What Causes Severe Headache In A Person With Carotid Aneuryisms In Brain With Spinal Stenosis?

default
Posted on Sun, 3 Jan 2016
Question: I've been told I have 3 carotid aneuryisms in my brain. I also have severe spinal stenosis and myopathy in C-4-C-7. Lately, I have some definite paralysis and weakness in my left arm. Came on gradually. Can't move left arm above head in standing position. I've also been waking up with a severe headache each day , seems to be centered behind my eyes and in the lower back part of the skull. Headache lightens after an hour up on my feet but never totally goes away

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that the pain in the arm is related to the severe spinal stenosis and possible nerve compression at this spinal column level.

From the other hand the headaches that you are feeling seem to be related to an increased intracranial pressure, as they increase during laying down.

Do you have nausea or vomiting?

A possible increase in the dimensions of the aneurysms or any other intracranial lesions may be the cause of such headache.

I recommend consulting with the neurologist for a careful physical examination and a brain angio CT scan or angio MRI if possible to investigate for any possible changes to the aneurysms or signs of increased intracranial pressure.

You should know that intracranial aneurysms may increase in dimensions with time. If this is confirmed in the CT scan or MRA follow up, the possibility of intervention should be taken into consideration, in order to avoid possible rupture and hemorrhage, which can be very harmful.

It is important discussing with a neurosurgeon also for the possibility of intervention and spinal decompression regarding the difficulty in moving your arm.

Hope to have been helpful!

Feel free to ask any other questions whenever you need!

Greetings!
