Posted on Thu, 18 Jan 2024
Question: I had hyatil hernia surgery with the wrap procedure to prevent acid reflux in October of 2016. All of a sudden my heartburn has come back with a vengeance. It is almost continuously, and nothing I take seems to help it that much. I am just wondering what is going on.

Brief Answer:
the failure rate of hernia repair is high

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

The failure rate of surgical repair of a hiatal hernia is high unfortunately. It can sometimes go as high as 42% depending on the method used, according to one medical study.

with the recurrence of your symptoms, this may be the case, for you. The recurrence due to failure of the surgery can occur at a varying time after the procedure eg months or years

It would be best to see your gastroenterologist for a review. Imaging would likely be needed to determine if this is the case.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
