Brief Answer:
HRT is needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
I assume you are post menopausal.
Hot flashes are treated with HRT ( hormone replacement therapy ).
Estrogen shots, patches, pills or gels.
Can you tell me why you cannot have them ?
Elaborate a bit more on your medical condition, so that I can suggest alternatives ?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Take care.

I am 55 XXXXXXX XXXXXXX I was getting estrogen shots 1@ month as Hormone Replacement Therapy, my Primary Care Physician at the The Family Practice Care center retired in May 2015 (my last estrogen shut May 12,2015) since I have been getting shots for over a year(and they no longer offer them in any form) Over concerns of women having possible heart attack ,stroke breast cancer.
(I also have Migraines and use Relpax for treatment) So since I have to start all over and choose a new Doctor. I just wanted to know what I might ask for, for a treatment plan.

Brief Answer:
Alternatives described.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Severe hot flashes require HRT, atleast for the time being.
There are various forms of HRT - pill , shot ( injection ) , patch, gel, spray.
It is not wise to continue HRT for more than 3 - 5 years at the maximum , as the risk of adverse events mounts up.
You have had it for a year, so you can continue HRT for some more time.
You can ask for estrogen patches / gels - they are quite effective and free of side effects that injectable / oral estrogen preparations have.
Also, you can try natural remedies.
Black cohosh, soya, ginseng - all have been reported to help.
Yoga and meditation, daily exercise and a nutritious diet that is free of fats and processed foods - all these have beneficial effects.
You should understand that just like menarche, menopause is just a phase, and will eventually go away.
You need to face this period with will power and a lot of patience, and just bear in mind that it will end one day.
HRT is just supposed to be a makeshift affair to help you tide over this difficult time.
Dress in layers - cool, comfortable cotton or linen fabrics that are breathable and light. The layering will help you to adjust your clothing.
Stay in temperature controlled atmospheres.
Avoid dehydration, drink a lot of fluids throughout the day.
Avoid smoking, drinking, caffeine, colas.
Use ice packs liberally .
More than 70 % of postmenopausal women experience this very distressing symptom, and hot flashes might persist for 6 months - 5 years.
