What Causes Severe Muscle Fatigue And Exhaustion After Exercising?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 May 2016
Question: I am a dental hygienist that has worked excessive hours and am experiencing a general fatigue in my musculature, exhaustion , overwork. I have taken a day off of work but do not feel good enough to go. Looking at two consecutive 12 hr shifts. I don't want to damage myself irreperably or get some long term "fibromialgia problem" . Should I push myself or should I rest. I'm not sure how to manage my body need .

Hello, and thanks for your question.

I'm sorry you're having such a difficult time. In my experience, when people are exhausted and burned out, if you don't take the time you need to recharge, bad things happen. You might make a mistake at work, get fired. Or worse. I highly recommend putting your health first, taking more time off work, and seeing a doctor to run some basic bloodwork. Then you'll begin to feel better.

Since you are a psychiatrist should I be addressing burnout and a mental aspect of my problem? What is a standard rest time for burnout address?

Detailed Answer:
It sounds like you could be experiencing symptoms of burnout, absolutely. I would recommend speaking to a therapist about this. It can take a few weeks of treatment in therapy, but this would be expected to help enormously.

Unfortunately, doctors cannot give written notes without examining a patient in-person. But I'm glad you are feeling better and made the right move for your health!
