What Causes Severe Nerve Pain In Foot Before Hip Replacement Surgery?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: Hello, I am 60 years old and will be getting a hip replacement hopefully in may. Is it normal for this worn out hip joint to be causing severe nerve pain, mostly in my feet. It feels like my feet are on fire. I am taking hydrocodone 10 with 325 acetaminophen and it helps the hip pain but doesn't do much for the fire in my feet. I hope you can help me. I have tried acupuncture and it doesn't helped either. Thankyou, XXXX

Brief Answer:
A nerve is probably being affected as well!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this pain that you have reported. Pain the goes to the legs is suggestive of a nerve pain. This is term neuropathic pain and in most cases caused by constant irritation of a nerve as it travels to the area it innervates. This is typically managed by using medications such as gabapentin, carbamazepine and amitryptylline. I will like you to ask your doctor about confirming this suspicion and getting the prescriptions to you. This pain is not caused by the hip joint destruction but rather a nerve impingement or compression.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Brief Answer:
Chiropractor, physical therapist and massage!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

In addition to drugs, I would recommend gentle exercises and massages. I am not a fan of acupuncture and would not be recommending it at this time. A chiropractor would be able to help with these. Also, vitamin B complex supplements may be of added help.

I wish you well.
